Punching bags have different training purposes and you’ll need to know its various types and what they’re good for. Each type will vary in its shape, size, and weight also because the experience and resistance they carry to your training.

Before heading to the gym or investing in your own punching bag, read this guide how you’ll use it and what you would like to do/achieve.

There are several types of punching bags, with different names which are based on their size, use and method. Most punching bags are covered with either synthetic or leather materials like vinyl which mildew and resist abrasion. Canvas can be used as a bag material where there’s lower use and humidity.

Heavy Duty Punching Bag:

Heavy duty punching bag or Jumbo punching bags as they’re sometimes known are for hard training, heavy and due to increased weight of the bag, will improve your muscular tonus and strength. Using heavy bag will build strength and are available as either hanging bags or free standing.


Uppercut punching bags are on the smaller side and are designed for training to enhance combination punches, such as hooks combined with uppercuts.

Combination punches are important to win matches, so are a essential part of training. Use uppercut bags to perfect the technique & then put within the hours to improve your speed.

Speed ball:

A speed ball is use to increase eye-hand coordination and it can improve a boxer’s conditioning. You’ll recognize a speed ball as being inflated and attached to a wall board, although they will be freestanding but very difficult to find for adult sizes.

Free standing

Free standing punch bags designed with a base which can be packed with water or sand and are usually easy to shift anywhere in a gym and for putting into storage. The taller versions are primarily designed for punching and kicking workouts and therefore the heavy style bags with bigger bases don’t move from their position when kicked.
